Gwynn Jr. to have MRI (shoulder) as 2009 Brewers camp rolls on.
Brewers outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. had a setback during a throwing drill Sunday and was to undergo an MRI scan Monday to determine the source of pain in his right shoulder.
Gwynn was supposed to serve as Milwaukee’s designated hitter against the Padres on Monday in Peoria, Ariz. The teams agreed to play under American League rules, but Angel Salome will hit in that spot instead, manager Ken Macha said.
It’s something of a setback for Gwynn, who is out of Minor League options and vying for a spot as one of the Brewers’ backup outfielders. He first felt pain in the shoulder before reporting to Maryvale Baseball Park for the start of Spring Training and has not been able to participate in any drills that require throwing. He did serve as the DH on Saturday against the Angels.
The Brewers were also waiting for word Monday about the health status of right-hander Braden Looper, who was scratched from his start Saturday because of a strained muscle at the back of his rib cage. He was to see a doctor on Monday.
