DUEL IN DALLAS
The New England Patriots went into Dallas Sunday and absolutely destroyed the Cowboys in all phases of the game as they beat the last unbeaten team in the NFC 48-27.
In a game dubbed, “The Duel in Dallas”, it turned out to be more like ” Patriots Games” as New England scored at will against a supposedly great Cowboys defense.
Tom Brady continues to rewrite the records books this season as he threw for 388 yards and 5 touchdowns in the win. Brady’s five TD tosses gives him 21 for the season and puts him well on pace to shatter Peyton Manning’s single season record of 49 TD passes.
Terrell Owens promised fans to get the popcorn out Sunday cause they were going to witness an offensive explosion. Owens was right on the mark. Unfortunately for Owens and Cowboys fans, Brady was so hot that he burnt not only all the popcorn in Texas but he scorched the Cowboys secondary time after time.
After the game the only thing left in the bag for Owens and the Cowboys were a couple of unpopped kernels and a lot of questions regarding how good Dallas actually is.
I’ll give Dallas credit for fighting and taking everything the Patriots threw at them for the first 2 1/2 quarters Sunday. The Cowboys actually led 24-21 when Tony Romo hit Patrick Clayton with an 8-yard scoring passes with a little over 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
That’s when Brady and the Patriots laid the law down and outscored the Cowboys 27-3 over the final 25 minutes. The Patriots were unstoppable the second half and many Cowboys fans where left wondering why Wade Phillips kicked a field goal with the Dallas trailing 38-24.
The Cowboys where inside the Patriots ten yard line at the six and if the Cowboys dont get a touchdown at least they would’ve pinned the Patriots in deep and it might’ve changed the Patriots play calling.
Phillips takes the easy three points and then watches the Patriots take the ball on a long time consuming drive that resulted in a Stephen Gostkowski field goal and a 41-27 lead which eventually clinched the game for the Patriots.
Did Phillips suffer from a quick bout of amnesia that he thought his Cowboys defense that gave up almost 500 yards to the Patriots would all of a sudden turn on a switch and start playing defense like the 1985 Chicago Bears.
Even though the Cowboys probably wouldn’t have won the game at least Phillips should’ve taken a shot at the end zone. If the Cowboys get the touchdown it might’ve brought a little confidence to the defense and they might’ve pull a stop out of their behinds and gave the offense a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Instead Phillips played it conservative again. When is Phillips going to realize that you have to take a chance or two in a big game, especially if you are trailing by 14 points with 10 minutes to go and your defense is as sturdy as an old shack in the path of a powerful Texas twister.
I will give the Patriots all the props after saying they were the most overrated 5-0 team in NFL history. They have dominated every opponent they have played this season and now that Brady has a powerful offensive arsenal behind him, they probably are the team to beat in the AFC.
I guess the whole world will find out November 4th when the Patriots travel to Indianapolis for an AFC showdown with the Colts. The game is being, “Whose your Daddy”.
